Breast Health Screening Day –

Mary Sproles Martin & Drema Bowles

Every year, twice a year, we spend the day doing what the Market raises money for us to do—we serve women in the community who otherwise would not have access to screening for breast cancer. Our Breast Health Screening Days are our way of putting into action what The Women’s Committee works all year to support.

Here are the numbers from April’s Screening Day:

  • 52 women registered. 7 of those either cancelled or did not show up.  We had 1 walk-in.
  • 4 women had clinical findings that required diagnostic exams.
  • 41 women were screened.  4 of those have required diagnostics.
  • 30 women had blood work.
  • 20 women were enrolled in Every Woman’s Life.

Each year those served take the time to thank us, talk about how well-coordinated the entire day is, and how comfortable we make them feel during this somewhat intimidating process. We are meeting a need in our community that is so important. Thank you for making this possible.

Each year the number of women attending who need a Spanish interpreter grows. If you speak Spanish that would be an amazing help as we have only a few medical interpreters who are stretched pretty thin on that day.

Your next opportunity to serve is October 27, 2018. If you have never participated in this life-saving day, please sign up. There are no words to thank all of those who join us every year for this amazing day. Please sign up for a shift and encourage your committee friends to join you. It is a meaningful and rewarding day both for the volunteers and the women we serve. The link to the sign up is HERE

Email Mary Sproles Martin at editormary@me.com or Drema Bowles at mdshtbowles@embarqmail.com if you need more information.

We also welcome the following new members who were unable to attend:  Anne Blair, Melissa Knabe, Ainsley Poulson, and our two newest members who have joined TWC since May: Donna Schuler and Kelly Thomas!

Our new members will have pink ribbons on their name-tags during their first year of TWC membership. Please take the opportunity to extend a warm welcome to these ladies at our events!

TWC currently welcomes new members year round; each Active member may sponsor new members after her first year of TWC membership. A Membership Application can be found on page 27 of the TWC Handbook, or can be sent to you by contacting Mindy Beaumont, TWC Membership Chair, at membershipchairtwc@gmail.com.

Updated 2018 TWC Handbooks were emailed to all members last month.  If you did not receive a Handbook, or have changes to your contact information, please contact Mindy.

Sponsorship Update:

Mindy Beaumont PhotoTWC would like to extend a sincere thank you to all of our kind sponsors for their generous support of Martha’s Market, In the Pink, and Squash Cancer. We would especially like to thank Wells Fargo, Presenting Sponsor for Martha’s Market; and BMW of Charlottesville, who is the Grand Slam Sponsor for In The Pink. We couldn’t do our great work without them, so please remember to thank them whenever possible!  We will have the full list of sponsors at the Kick Off Meeting, and we hope you will all take a moment to learn more about who they are. Together, we do great things for the women of our community!

And a sincere thank you to all members who have made their annual contribution to TWC so far this year! These financial gifts help our efforts and add to the monies we annually allocate to programs and services at the Hospital.  Our goal each year is to have 100% participation from all actives and we certainly welcome donations from our tenured members, too!

If you have not yet made your contribution this year, you can do so online HERE.

We are especially grateful for some recent TWC sponsor level gifts to commemorate the 25th anniversary, both at the Patron ($1,000) and Major ($2,500) levels.  In fact, we are hoping to secure 25 Patron Sponsors for the 25th Anniversary as a fun challenge this year!  Please note that a Patron level sponsorship includes two tickets to the Preview Gala!  If you are interested in helping with this goal, please contact Angela at the Foundation Office at (434) 654-8258 or aaherste@sentara.com.

Martha’s Market Chair – Susan Webb

UntitledIn less than three months, The Women’s Committee will be hosting the 25th Annual Martha’s Market from Thursday, October 4 through Sunday, October 7.  This is a busy time for TWC. Local businesses and individuals are being asked to sponsor Martha’s Market, vendor applications are being approved and offered, and we are finalizing exhibits and print and design work.  Our Public Relations team is working very hard to create awareness and excitement for the Market. Please be sure to “like” and “share” our Facebook and Instagram posts. We want this event to be the “Talk of the Town” so that everyone will want to be there!

Our theme for the Market this year will be the Roaring 20’s and the decorations will feature elements from that era. Festive attire will be optional at the Preview Gala, and I hope that you will come dressed in your favorite 20’s outfit, whether that be a simple black dress with long pearls or a flapper dress with a feather headband!  An exciting change this year will be the addition of a Silent Auction at our Preview Party. Don’t worry, we will continue with Vendor Raffles during regular Market hours! Our Event Donations planning team is working hard to secure some fabulous prizes. Please read below for further information on the Silent Auction from our Event Donations and Raffles Chairs.

A successful Market depends on all of us working together. We can’t do it without each and everyone of you! With all of your efforts, we can make the Market a momentous success. Thank you for committing your time and talents to TWC and 2018 Martha’s Market!

Volunteer Coordinator – Randi Marshall

I hope everyone is having a great summer and enjoying some relaxation. Thank you to the members who have signed up already on the signup genius for the 2018 Martha’s Market. If you haven’t had a chance, please do so as soon as you can! We still have quite a few areas of need and this way you won’t have me sending you a bunch of pesky emails reminding you to SIGN UP! The link is HERE.

Event Donations – Ann Blankenbaker

The Events Donation Committee has been combing the town and country to find special prizes and gifts for ITP, Squash Cancer, and Preview Party Raffles! Oh wait, did I say Raffles? Nope! We’re changing it up this year. Welcome to the Preview Party SILENT AUCTION!

This year, with this change, we are in search of special silent auction items…perhaps an item such as a fabulous stay at a vacation home, a guided trip or tour, or just about any wonderful experience or thing to commemorate our 25th Preview Party. We are asking YOU if you have anything to donate that would WOW our guests and make them dig deep into their pockets. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! I can be contacted at abseivertson@gmail.com. I am open to all ideas, even if you think your idea is too “out of the box”! This is an exciting year with the 25th Anniversary, so we really want to make it special for everyone.

Raffle Donations – Kelly Bruton

In honor of the 25th anniversary of Martha’s Market — and thus, the 25th Preview Party — Raffles is changing things up from baskets to bid sheets for our Silent Auction!  We have some special items and opportunities already promised for our Preview Party guests: a relaxing escape to Nags Head (generously donated by TWC member Rhonda Puryear) and a stunning painting from Randi Marshall’s aunt. There’s also something sparkly from Keller & George. In all, we are planning 25 special items, in every range and interest… experiences, events, gift certificates, dining.

Please plan to attend, and remember — bid early, bid often!

Vendors – Sarah Fauerbach & Gail Smith

Our vendor chairs are excited to announce that Martha’s Market 2018 will feature a wonderful collection of returning and new vendors! We are in the final rounds of our vendor selection process and will send out an update as soon as it is complete. Please encourage your friends to follow us on social media for vendor highlights!

Decorations Chair – Amanda Fertile

As part of our Decorations, we will be unveiling an exciting addition to this year’s Market that brings focus to all that we work so hard to accomplish through all three of our annual fundraisers.

Celebrating Hope Portraits

Twelve beautiful black & white, 3′ X 4′ portraits will be on display during the Preview Gala and Martha’s Market in a central gallery area of the John Paul Jones Arena main lobby. The women in these portraits represent our community of warriors who have survived and conquered cancer. They have all been treated at Sentara Martha Jefferson and benefitted by many of the programs supported by TWC. Click HERE to view a sample of one of our portraits.

Celebrating Hope & Honoring Memories

In addition to the portraits, we will display thoughtfully designed boards containing a list of names of all the women we wish to honor or memorialize. This list may contain the names of women who have touched us from near or far, could be a neighbor, friend, sister or mother. The only prerequisite is that the name shared is someone that you are sure would want to be recognized this way or her family would want her memory recognized in this way (artwork coming soon).

How You Can Help

Please join us in Celebrating Hope and/or Honoring the Memory of any special woman in your life by thoughtfully sharing the name(s) with us so we can include them as a special part of our Gallery of Hope.  These name(s) should be emailed by August 1st to the Foundation office at MJH_Foundation@Sentara.com.

Phew!  You have made it to the end of this newsletter!

One final note:  If you have any names to add to our Preview Gala mailing list, please email names and addresses to Angela at the Foundation Office at aaherste@sentara.com no later than August 3rd. And don’t worry, we will also have an electronic version of the Preview Gala invitation that you will be able to send to ALL your friends and family prior to the event!

See you SOON!
