Martha’s Market 2019

Where: Boar’s Head Resort Pavilion

When: November 15th-17th

Hours: Friday TBD, Saturday and Sunday 10am-5pm

Celebration of Hope Gala – Saturday November 16th, 7-10 pm

Venue Information

  • The Market will be located in the Gallery and Main Ballroom of the Pavilion.
  • Boar’s Head will have beautifully decorated for Christmas, eliminating the need for exhibits and decorations.
  • There will be NO restrictions on food/alcohol.
    • We will have a cash bar available during all shopping hours.
    • We are exploring food cart options as well.
  • Boar’s Head has committed to having all booths with pipe and drape set up late Thursday evening ready for move in on Friday, November 15th
  • Space for both vendor suite and volunteer suite.
  • Parking lot shuttle will be available.

Schedule Information

  • Move-in will be on Friday, November 15th and start as early as 6 am
  • Shopping will start Friday late afternoon/evening (exact time TBD) – we will be marketing this as Friday happy hour shopping for the community
  • Saturday/Sunday shopping will be from 10 am-5 pm
  • Saturday Evening – Celebration of Hope Gala from 7-10 pm

Celebration of Hope Gala – Saturday November 16th, 7-10 pm

  • Replaces the Preview Party
  • Utilizes our new Portraits of Hope
  • Silent Auction and Shopping
  • 300 attendee cap – 150 tickets will be reserved for sponsors
  • Ticket price will be $100 this year

Vendor/Move-In Information

  • Vendor Chairs – Gail Smith & Randi Marshall (mmvendorchair@gmail.com)
  • Vendor Services Chair – Beth Fraser (bkfraser@comcast.net)
  • Approximately 40-45 vendors this year – opportunity to be selective
  • Move-In will be on Friday and start as early as 6am
    • Boar’s Head has three entrances to support move-in and feel confident it will be a smooth and efficient process
  • Space for both a vendor suite and volunteer suite

Volunteer Information

  • Shift sign-ups COMING SOON – we are still figuring out the numbers needed with all the changes!
  • Vendor selection committee – we would like to add at least one person to the vendor selection committee to work with Gail and Randi in order to train some new people on how this process works. It’s a really fun role!  Let us know if you are interested!
  • PR committee – we would like to add 1-2 to the PR committee for this year to help with organizing print and digital media along with TV/radio spots. Let us know if you are interested!

Spring is HERE!  I know it’s hard to believe and the wacky weather isn’t helping, but March 20th is the official first day of spring and planning for this year’s fundraisers is well underway! 2019 is going to be an exciting year for TWC with some big changes planned for our 26th year of Martha’s Market. We will also be hosting the 7th annual Squash Cancer Tournament and the 17th annual In the Pink Tennis Tournament.

As we gear up for this year’s events, I encourage all members to take a moment and think back to WHY you became involved in The Women’s Committee. Was it a friend that got you involved? Are you a survivor? Has a loved one benefited from the hospital’s cancer support services? What’s your connection? It’s important for us to remember why we give our time and energy during the year in support of fundraising for SMJH. The services we fund have a tremendous impact on our community. I became involved with In the Pink through a friend in 2012. In 2014, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and I was her advocate. I saw, first hand, how the ease of getting soft prosthetics, wigs, hats, and scarves at Marianne’s Room provided comfort and relief. I heard about the lovely hand massages my mom received during chemotherapy. My mom even still talks about the spring fly fishing trip! None of these areas of support would have existed without the dedication and commitment of you as a member of The Women’s Committee. The success of recent years events have also enabled TWC to help fund important new hospital programs that epitomize the SMJH caring tradition such as the High-Risk Breast Program, the Cancer Survivorship Program and the Family Caregiver Support Program and Center. You make a real difference in our community and I want to personally thank you.

Also, a heartfelt THANKS to retiring TWC Board members Katy Kreienbaum, Bonnie Hagerman, Barkley Laing, Mindy Beaumont and Sarah Fauerbach. Your years of commitment and dedication have been an inspiration. In addition, an enthusiastic welcome to all new active members and new Board members! We are looking forward to a fantastic year.

Please plan to join us for our Annual Meeting on Wednesday, March 27th at Farmington Country Club. We will present our Big Check for the Hospital, hear from SMJH President Jonathan Davis, and Amanda will share the exciting changes for this year’s Martha’s Market! You don’t want to miss it!

Martha’s Market Chair, Amanda Fertile

Lovely ladies of TWC, I am incredibly grateful to have the opportunity to serve as the 2019 Martha’s Market Chair! I have had a phenomenal experience serving on the TWC Board over the past five years and I am honored to be able to continue this extraordinary service opportunity with each and every one of you.

Last year, we celebrated the 25th Anniversary of Martha’s Market! What an experience!!

Today, we stand on the shoulders of ALL of the incredible women over the past 26 years who have gone before us and set the foundation for this wonderful organization. They have devoted their precious time, energy, resources, and passion to help raise awareness and funds for women’s breast health care services at Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital. Without their vision, commitment, and continued support, The Women’s Committee would not be what it is today. I am incredibly proud to be able to carry on that tradition and with that…. We are very excited to announce that we are going Back! To where it all began!

There are many exciting changes in store for Martha’s Market this year and you do not want to miss the big reveal at the TWC Annual Meeting! I can’t wait for another year to work among all the talented, passionate and dynamic ladies of TWC.

We know that all of you are busy women with multiple commitments and that your time is valuable.  This is why we are going to try to make it as easy and convenient for you to serve this year as possible. There will be some changes:

CHANGE #1 – You will have your choice of how you complete your hours

You can EITHER sign up for one of our committees and complete some or all of your hours ahead of Martha’s Market (depending on the committee) OR you can wait to sign up to complete your hours DURING Market Week (sign ups will be emailed closer to Martha’s Market)

CHANGE #2 – Sign up for a committee at the Annual Meeting

There will be very limited spots on committees, so please join us at the Annual Meeting if you don’t want to miss out on being able to participate in your favorite committee.

This new process will be explained in more detail at our Annual Meeting. Be on the lookout for an email from me with information on how you can sign up for your shifts during the Market. If you need to reach me in the meantime, click here.

TWC warmly welcomes its newest members!

Our newest members will have a pink ribbon on their name tags during their first year of TWC Membership.  Please take the opportunity to extend a warm welcome to these ladies at our upcoming events!

We would like to recognize Katy Kreienbaum, Mindy Beaumont, Bonnie Hagerman, Barkley Laing, and Sarah Fauerbach who have completed their term on the TWC Board. A heartfelt thank you to each of these ladies; TWC is extremely grateful for your many years of dedicated service, and we look forward to your continued involvement with our fundraising events.

TWC welcomes new members year round, and each returning Active member may sponsor new members without limit until TWC reaches its new cap of 160 members.   An updated Membership Application will be placed in the revised TWC Handbook, which will be available soon. Until then, you may request a 2019 application from Heather Marcel, TWC Membership Chair .

Friendly Reminders!

  • The 2019 Active Member Renewal due date is March 27, 2019. It’s a SINGLE CLICK on the website.  Have you returned your form?  Our goal is to have 100% of Renewal Forms returned at our Annual Meeting on March 27, 2019.  Please contact Heather Marcel with any questions.
  • Each Active Member is required to make an annual financial contribution to The Women’s Committee. The financial contribution is due by April 1, 2019. You can easily submit your donation online below or write a check at our Annual Meeting:

Breast Health Screening Day, Mary Sproules Martin

It’s time to plan for the next Breast Health Screening Day! If you have never joined us for this amazing event, please mark your calendar for Saturday, April 27! This event allows 50 women access to free breast health screening each time we offer the service. You can sign up here.

Our last BHSD in October made a difference to the women in our community who otherwise would neglect their health. Here are the numbers:

  • 55 women registered.
    • 5 of those either cancelled or did not show up.  
    • We had 1 walk-in.  
  • 51 women were screened.
    • 5 women had clinical findings that required diagnostic exams.  
    • 2 of these were referred to a surgeon.
  • 41 women had blood work.

Did you catch that? Because of your service on the committee, five women were able to have problems found and explored further and two women were referred to a surgeon. Without this service, they might not have been aware of these issues requiring surgery. We make a difference; this is why we do what we do.

Each year those served thank us and talk about how well-coordinated the entire day is and how comfortable we make them. Each year the number of women attending who need a Spanish interpreter grows. We are meeting a vital need in our community. Thank you for making this possible.

In The Pink, Anjula Joseph

Mark your calendars and join us for In the Pink 2019! The 17th annual ITP tennis TWC_Newsletter_Pictournament will be held this year on Friday, September 27th, 6:30-9:00 PM, for Mixed in Pink at Keswick and on Saturday, September 28th, 9:00 AM- 12:00 PM for Men in Pink (ACAC), Kids in Pink (Boar’s Head Sports Club), and Women in Pink (Forest Lakes, Keswick, Glenmore, Farmington, and Boar’s Head Sports Club).

We are thrilled to raise funds from these events in support of Marianne’s Room and the Cancer Resource Center, which provide wigs, hats, scarves and post-surgical prostheses free of charge for women undergoing breast cancer treatment.  Additional details regarding the ITP tennis tournament are forthcoming. In the meantime, please save those dates and plan to join us for some fun and competitive tennis while helping further the Caring Tradition of Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital!

Squash Cancer, Tara Neiderer

Save the Date!  The 7th Annual Squash Cancer Tournament hosted by The Women’s Committee will be held on Saturday, September 28th, 1– 4:00 PM.   The tournament will be a great way for players to kick off their squash season. Squash Cancer is a fun way to compete in a low-key platform while supporting a terrific cause. Due to the expanse of Junior Squash at Boar’s Head, we are excited to announce we will be including a youth option this year.  This year the tournament will still be held at McArthur Squash Center, following the In the Pink Tennis event.

As in past years, proceeds will benefit the bi-annual Breast Health Screening Days offered at Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital.  This program provides a health screening and mammogram to women in our community who are financially unable to pay for this service. We hope you will join us for this fun event.
